I’m fortunate enough to have many talented friends, many of which write incredible songs, and as a songwriter myself, I often break down their songs line by line to figure out what it’s about, what the inspiration is, and to find those beautiful idiosyncrasies that makes the song truly special.

I write from personal experience, a way for me to talk about things that affect me, as I’ve never really been that good at just simply talking about it. While I find that this is what helps me to get through my own issues, I’ve never really felt a real emotion while simply just playing the song. That is until last night.

There’s been a song of ours that we’ve been working on for a while, I liked the idea behind it, and I could see that it had real potential, but it still wasn’t all the way there. I’ve been working on the lyrics for a few days, bouncing ideas off of Drew, and really trying to make this work and make it the best that it could possibly be. We would get better and better lyrically, but somehow it just didn’t feel right, until the lyrics started to relate to some of my own recent experiences. Instantly the whole song opened up to a new realm of ideas, and sure enough, the words just came. It’s something I’ve definitely not been too comfortable talking about, with the fear of it coming across as twee, or cliché. But I feel that this is the right time for me to address these issues in the only way I really know how.
Never in my life has a song ever moved me in this way, I could feel the chills rush down my spine, and the possibility of welling up was nigh. This, to me, is what songwriting is all about.
